Winter League Final Report

What a fantastic finish to this year’s Winter League sponsored by Bowe Dental. The BIG STORY, as usual, comes from Section A won by the Sharks led by Captain Avril Hayes. Firstly, they scraped into the semi-finals only because they beat the Hyenas in Round 3, thus securing the #4 position on the table. Then they scraped into the Finals because their #3/#4s won a third set tie-break 10/6 AND their #2/#3s won a tie-break by the slim margin of 10/8 against the top-ranked Gators. Last night they won the final 2-0 against the Owls but that too included the #1/#2s winning a third set tie-break 10/6. You’d have to say, they handled the pressure extremely well. Amazing!
In doing so Patrick Aherne did the Double (winning two years in a row), as did Sinead Mannix*. Dee Finn won the Double too in Section C.
Massive congratulations as well to the other Section winners – Foxes, Cobras and Bears.
The Foxes, captained by Yvonne Briody, won a #2/#3 tiebreak.
The Cobras, led by Morgan O’Reilly, went the whole WL without a loss.
The Bears, with Roseanne Schot as captain, had to win a third set tie-break and a #2/#3 tie-break to secure their title.
Some WL facts: 11 of the 16 matches this week went to a #2/#3 tie-break.
The “Curse of topping the table and not winning the WL” continued:
Section A – every year since 2017
Section B – every year but one since 2016
